There are several types of sheetrock or gypsum board on the market and you should only use that which is most beneficial to you. Let’s dive into the features of each and things for you to consider when choosing which is right for your home. For example, if you would like drywall for use in a garage that stores flammable liquids, then the best plasterboard has a higher fire rating for that application. You may also change your choice for alternate areas in your home, such as bathrooms, bedrooms, or basements. First, let’s start with the basics such as sizing. Boards come in different thicknesses:
Regular drywall is sometimes referred to as, white board. It is the most common type of board in the market and could be used in residential and commercial applications. It comes in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 3/8 -1 inch with a standard measurement of 4 x 8 ft. One main advantage of this panel is that it is light to use hence ideal for wall and ceiling finishing. They are also fire resistant by nature because gypsum is a noncombustible textile and drywall contains water molecules that slow down the fire. When subjected to excessive heat levels we see in a house fire the boards will release the water as steam and dehydrate the boards. This slows the spread of the fire leaving enough time for the people and possibly the structure to be rescued.
Moisture-resistant boards are also known as green boards. This is because they have a green covering that protects them from moisture. The green coating is a chemically treated wax that makes the board resistant to mildew and mild moisture levels. That doesn’t mean you want to rely on it for a tub or shower surround and it should be covered with tiles, PVC, fibreglass, or other solid materials like steel. For this reason, green boards are suitable for use in water-prone areas such as the kitchen and bathroom. These areas are where regular drywall can suffer and a treated gypsum board is the better choice. Despite its moisture-resistant capabilities, keep in mind that green boards are not water-proof. To install a water-proof finish we advise the installation of the proper coverage that was made for it.
Purple boards are also known for mould, mildew and moisture-resistant properties. Purple panels are designed the same way as regular boards but treated to offer superior mould-resistant capabilities. It is more expensive than standard boards but because mould can make you seriously ill, the benefits far outweigh the cost. We often recommend this to homeowners in the lower mainland of British Columbia because we have so much rain throughout the season. We are a very wet area in the province which often leads to high amounts of moisture within our homes.
Another benefit of purple boards is that they are impact-resistant, especially to scuffs, scratches, and dents caused by wear and tear of home life. So why choose purple over green? Purple drywall is not only moisture resistant but prevents mould and mildew. Plus it’s naturally resistant to fire like other drywall types. Making it an all-around great choice to install in your home in Surrey, BC by Deluxe Drywall.
Now let’s talk about Blue drywall which is alternatively called plaster baseboard. It is mould-resistant and water-resistant. It is ideal for bathroom use because they are moisture-resistant similar to purple board with its mould-resistant properties. This makes it great for areas that actually come in contact with water. It is best for use in veneer plastering. Veneer plastering is an alternate choice to drywall and joint compounds because of some of its added benefits such as its durability and additional moisture resistance. Blue boards can also reduce sound between walls and ceilings. Overall a good choice for drywall.
Type X drywall is also known as fire-resistant wallboard. It is fire-resistant because it is made of non-combustible fibres stacked together to form several thick layers. Usually, a type X board has a thickness of 5/8 inch with a one-hour fire rating. If it has a ½-inch thickness, then the fire rating reduces to ¾ of an hour. According to local building codes, type X panels should be installed in commercial buildings, garages, and bedrooms and are often used in apartments. The thick layers also make the board soundproof because it absorbs sound energy. That makes the most common choice of boards for noise reduction and soundproofing. We recommend this as a great option for drywall ceiling installations to help prevent fire and sound movement between floors in your residence.
Another fire-resistant wallboard is the type C board, which is suitable for use in fire-risk areas. It is considered to be the upgraded and more advanced version of type X. Both of their properties are very similar however type C has more glass fibres which makes it a more preferable option in fire situations. An added benefit is the additive vermiculite because its properties make it less likely to shrink as the water evaporates from the board when exposed to high heat. If you recall gypsum is noncombustible and it's the water within that evaporates in the presence of fire making the boards brittle and will often break once the water is gone. Type C is less likely to have this occur and increases the fire rating.
This board is made of laminated gypsum and a mix of polymers and wood fibres. The polymers are responsible for giving the panels their soundproofing capabilities. It is also a bit harder to cut than regular boards because it has several thick layers of fibre. These products are suitable for installation in family rooms, music studios and home theatres. Similar to fire ratings, boards can also be assigned a sound transmission class that helps you understand how much sound the board is going to prevent.
Companies have continued to design environmentally friendly boards to be at par with consumer demands. They are alternate options to your gypsum-style drywall boards. These types of wall coverings are made from earth-friendly materials, have reduced emissions in the manufacturing process, and do not release chemical vapours which reduces indoor pollution within your home.
One of them being EcoRock. EcoRock is a type of board made from more than 20 recycled products of which is 85% industrial by-products and is also termite and mould resistant. Unlike regular drywall, it is fully recyclable. Another eco-friendly board is the Enviroboard. This board comprises compressed fibre panels extracted from waste fibres such as newspaper waste and agricultural waste. These natural products make picking an eco-friendly board an easy choice.
