Drywall Sanding Tips

Sanding drywall is a complicated job that requires to be handled by a qualified drywall contractor. The sanding process is messy because the contractor needs to know how to contain the dust produced.

When a joint compound is applied over cracks and imperfections, it leaves an uneven surface that destroys your house's aesthetic beauty. If sanding is not done, then the defects will appear even if you gloss or paint the area. There are two sanding techniques to be aware of:

Dry drywall sanding

This is the messiest technique because it uses a sander to smoothen out the wall. Our sanders have the right equipment such as face masks and gloves.

Wet Drywall Sanding

The main advantage of wet drywall sanding is that it is not as messy as dry sanding. Wet sanding uses a damp sponge to sand the preferred gypsum board. This method is preferred when you want to create a foundation for tile installation.

For every sanding job we do, we ensure we have the right tools. Some of these tools include:

  • Trouble light
  • Sanding block
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding Pole

If it is a small sanding job, we prefer to use a hand sander and a drywall pole sander for bigger jobs. Once the area is sand, it is primed and paint.

Drywall Painting After Sanding

Before you paint drywall, the wall must first be primed. Priming is when you apply a flat paint to a wall so that it provides a consistent base for topcoats. Without a primer, ordinary paint will be soaked into the plasterboard, forcing the painter to spend more on paint than is required.

Other advantages of priming are:

  • It covers imperfections, such as repaired patches
  • It seals pores in drywall
  • Creates an adhesive surface for topcoats to stick to
  • Primers block out odors and stains

When Should You Use a Primer?

There are certain instances when a primer should be used. These are:

When Installing a new Wallboard

New wallboards tend to be absorbent, meaning that it will absorb paint if a primer is not used. To avoid large amounts of paint from going to waste, we advise you use a primer first.

If You are Making a Colour Change

If the original wall was red in color and wanted to paint it blue, you have to use a primer. Failure to prime will result in the blue and red colors mixing, creating two shades instead. A primer will turn the surface color to white, making it easy to adopt a new color.

If You Want to Cover a Stain

If you have a strong odor such as that of cigarette smoke or greasy spots on the wall, then we advise a primer to be used. If not used, the greasy marks will still be visible even when applying a new color.

There are certain precautions that we take when sanding, priming, and painting drywall. These are:

  • We ensure that we have covered furniture and cabinets with a thin plastic film
  • We do not leave any debris or waste material such as empty cans on the ground
  • We use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust particles
